Summer Employment Opportunity
** Recruiting for the Summer 2012 intake is open. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 11 at 4:00 p.m.**
In 2009 the Halton Regional Police Service was approached by the Ministry to participate in the Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) Program. The Service agreed to participate in this program, with the intent of hiring six summer students for eight weeks commencing in June.
In June 2010, first six students were selected from a pool of 60 applications. They represented the four municipalities and the cultural diversity of our region. They began the program with the Halton Regional Police Service as six individuals with varying degrees of support for the police and a small amount of knowledge of what the role of the police was in their community.
During the eight week pilot program the six students were involved in a children's summer camp as mentors and team leaders. They also took part in presentations and demonstrations from various operational and administrative units within the Service. They also were able to participate in training scenarios with the Emergency Services Units and took part in three ride-along sessions in the districts.
By the end of the program, these six individuals had become a cohesive a team with a common bond. They had a greater understanding and respect for what the members of the Halton Regional Police Service contribute to society on a daily basis. Their level of support for the police increased significantly, and parents witnessed the maturation of their children over the summer months. All of the students have committed themselves to work toward becoming police officers with this police Service.
The success of YIPI resulted in the hiring of a second group of eight students in the summer of 2011.
In 2012, the Halton Regional Police Service will be hiring six students for this program.
