Report A Collision

Collision Reporting Criteria:

The Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA) sets out criteria for motor vehicle collision reporting in Ontario.

By law, motor vehicle collisions meeting any one of the criteria outlined below must be reported to the police service governing the jurisdiction in which the motor vehicle collision occurs:
  • Death or injury
  • Suspected criminal activity, including fail to remain, impaired driving and/or stolen vehicles
  • Damage to public property or motor vehicles
  • Hazardous materials and/or conditions
  • Community safety zones
  • Unlicenced/uninsured/suspended drivers
  • Disturbances between involved persons
  • A vehicle damaged to the point it is not drivable
  • Major traffic congestion as a result of the collision
  • Person who demands police attendance at the scene
  • Reason to believe a driving offence has been committed against federal, provincial or municipal legislation where charges may be appropriate

For collisions meeting this criteria, contact 905-825-4777. For emergency assistance for incidents involving serious personal injury, call 9-1-1 immediately. A Halton Regional Police Service officer(s) will attend the scene to conduct a preliminary investigation and determine next steps.

Motor vehicle collisions not meeting the above criteria will or should be directed to the Police Reporting Centre (PRC).

Minor motor vehicle collisions north of Brittania Road should be reported to the District in which they occur.

Before Attending the Police Reporting Centre:
  • If it is safe to do so, remove the vehicle from the roadway
  • Exchange information with all other involved parties, including independent witnesses. Be sure to obtain:
    • Names
    • Addresses
    • Telephone numbers
    • Insurance
    • Vehicle particulars

The Highway Traffic Act requires that all collisions with total damage in excess of $1,000.00 are required to report forthwith to the nearest police service agency. At that time, you may be directed to the HRPS Police Reporting Centre at 1151 Bronte Road in Oakville or a police officer may be dispatched directly to the scene.

Ensure that you have all documentation, including driver's licence, ownership, proof of insurance and any other pertinent information with you when you attend the PRC.

At the Police Reporting Centre:

Upon arrival, check-in with an HRPS resource officer at the PRC desk. The officer will provide you with the necessary forms and documentation.

Fill out the Self-Reporting Form, including all details pertaining to the motor vehicle collision.

An HRPS officer will be assigned to inspect your vehicle and will complete your report as soon as they are able.
