The Halton Regional Police (HRPS), in partnership with other police and law enforcement agencies, will be conducting a two-day commercial motor vehicle inspection & enforcement blitz on October 6 and 7, 2020. The inspection site will be located at the Mohawk Racetrack on Guelph Line in the Town of Milton.
Enforcement officers will deploy across Halton Region, which includes the 400-series highways, looking for commercial vehicles that appear to be deficient in mechanical fitness or display a safety or load concern. Those vehicles will be subjected to a traffic stop and escorted to the inspection site at Mohawk under the authority of the Highway Traffic Act.
This annual initiative is an integral part of Halton's traffic enforcement strategy. Any vehicles found to be unsafe will be taken off the road. Cargo and the corresponding administrative paperwork required to be carried by the drivers will be inspected. Light commercial vehicles such as small panel trucks, cube vans and pick-up trucks with trailers will also be subject to this inspection.
Last year a total of 308 vehicles were inspected over the two-day period. 239 charges were laid and 99 trucks were taken out of service (representing a 33 per cent failure rate).
Road safety remains a top priority in Halton Region. Enforcement campaigns such as this are essential to ensuring our roads and highways remain safe for all users. The HRPS message to the thousands of commercial motor vehicle operators who travel on our roadways is that compliance to rules and regulations is non-negotiable and community safety will not be compromised.
This event will kick off at 7:00 am Tuesday morning with comments from HRPS Sergeant Ryan Snow. More than 50 officers from across the GTA will be in attendance.
All media outlets are invited to attend and observe those remarks prior to the start of the blitz. There will also be additional photo and interview opportunities available.
Media are asked to check in with Sergeant Ryan Snow of the Traffic Services Unit on arrival (media are also asked to RSVP and confirm attendance via email at firstname.lastname@example.org). Finally, media are also asked not to publicly communicate details of the Commercial Motor Vehicle Blitz in advance of 7:00 am Tuesday morning.
Mohawk Raceway is located at 9430 Guelph Line (Highway 401 and Guelph Line) in the Town of Milton.
