Mayor Burton won re-election to a third term as Oakville’s Mayor in October 2014. His mandate continues to be controlling growth, debt and taxes, protecting green space and the environment, developing more community facilities to meet the needs of the community, and making Halton Canada’s most sustainable region.
Prior to running for public office, Mayor Burton was best known for starting YTV and had a successful career as a businessman, director and producer in journalism, film and television.
During his time as Mayor, many groundbreaking initiatives that protect Halton and Oakville’s ability to control the built and natural environment and the health, safety and finances of the community have been implemented. These include the Oakville and Halton Natural Heritage Systems, the Town Energy Management Plan, the Health Protection Air Quality By-law, the new official plans Livable Oakville and Sustainable Halton, the Emerald Ash Borer Management Program, as well as the Oakville Climate Change Adaptation Plan and the North Oakville Urban Forest Strategic Management Plan.
Mayor Burton co-chairs the Municipal Leaders for the Greenbelt. Environmental Defence Canada calls him the greenest mayor in Canada.
Mayor Burton chairs the Halton Health and Social Services committee and Regional Police Services Board, as well as the Ontario Auto Mayors Caucus and Canadian Nuclear Technology Mayors Association. He also serves on the boards of Halton Healthcare, Halton Community Housing Corporation, Oakville Hydro Corporation and the Oakville Downtown BIA. He avidly supports Oakville’s sports, arts and culture groups and charities.
