The Halton Regional Police Service Forensic Services is managed by Detective Sergeant Rhonda Alcock.
This specialized team of trained officers provides technical and photographic assistance to all investigative branches of the HRPS and is responsible for locating, recording, gathering, analyzing and evaluating physical evidence from traditional crime scenes and major motor vehicle collisions.
Members of the Service's Forensic Identification Unit are also routinely called upon to provide expert court testimony in areas such as fingerprint analysis, footwear identifications, and physical matches.
In addition to their investigative work, the Forensic Identification Unit facilitates and supports the newly centralized full time uniform Scenes of Crime Program. These members are responsible for processing traditional crime scenes with the purpose of identifying individuals linked to the crime. Implementation of this program has improved efficiencies to front line officers as well as increased customer service.
An ongoing relationship with the University of Toronto – Mississauga Campus which provides a university level forensic program and degree, has enabled a student mentorship/research program to thrive within the Forensic Services – Identification Section for a number of years now. Valuable research information into an array of topics has resulted.
The Unit also endeavours to stay knowledgeable on current technologies which may provide enhanced services. An unmanned aerial vehicle has been used at major accident scenes, crime scenes and to assist in searching for missing persons. A laser for crime scene and exhibit analysis is the latest acquisition.
The Halton Regional Police Service Forensic Identification Unit has been recognized with five Tiller Awards for Excellence in Police Photography at the Annual Canadian Identification Society Conference.
Forensic Services also provides electronic fingerprint services for both criminal and civilian fingerprinting, including security clearances and vulnerable sector checks.
