Halton Seniors Helpline
The Halton Regional Police Service, in partnership with Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.) launched the Halton Seniors Helpline in January 2008.
The Halton Seniors Helpline is a resource for members of the Region' seniors community to seek information, guidance, support and referrals on a wide range of issues and concerns, including:
- Sorting out problems
- Local seniors' support services
- Assisting in the care of an older adult
- Physical, emotional and/orfinancial abuse or neglect
The toll-free number is 1-866-457-8252. Trained senior volunteers are available Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Volunteers are being accepted for the Halton Seniors Helpline. To be considered for one of the available positions, you must:
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide support, accurate and factual information to callers, and refer to Community Support Services, as warranted.
- Attend meetings when required; approximately four per year.
- Attend training sessions when required.
- Attend special events in the community (i.e. Burlington Sound of Music Festival, Oakville Waterfront Festival, RibFest, Police Day, Seniors Picnics, Halton Multicultural Events, etc...).
- Participate in table top displays presenting Halton Regional Police Service Crime Prevention literature, Elder Abuse brochures, Halton Seniors Helpline promotional material, etc...
- Advise the Elder Services Coordinator of any issues/concerns that arise with seniors in the community.
- Adhere to the HRPS confidentiality agreement.
- Adhere to the policies outlined in the Halton Seniors Helpline Training Manual.
- Agree to an annual criminal records check.
- Work a minimum of one shift per month.
- Commit to 60 hours of volunteer time per calendar year. This can include Helpline shifts, meetings, training, presentations, community outreach, special events, table top displays, other duties as assigned.
Eligible candidates for Halton Seniors Helpline Volunteers include adults 50+ years of age who pass a criminal history background check, and possess the following qualities and skills:
- are caring, empathetic, patient and non-judgemental.
- possess good listening skills and common sense.
- have basic computer skills.
Support Provided: Training for this position will be provided at two full-day training sessions, as well as two shadowing shifts with an experienced volunteer. In addition, the Halton Seniors Helpline Volunteer Coordinator is available on an on-going basis to answer questions and provide other assistance as needed.
