Executive Message
Geographically, culturally and socially, it is deeply rewarding to reflect on the ways our region has evolved since the Halton Regional Police Service was established on January 1, 1974. What started as a team of 205 sworn officers and 45 civilian members, has more than 50 years later grown into 860 sworn officers and 352 civilians. Our police service has grown and evolved alongside the community we proudly serve, enabling and empowering our members to meet its increasing needs and rising expectations of excellence.
Our mission - One Team – People First - reflects our commitment to the people we serve. Every action we take is rooted in the belief that public safety begins with strong relationships and a united purpose. Together, with our community, we have grown stronger and more resilient, evolving to meet every challenge and embracing innovation as we continue to deliver exceptional service.
As public servants, we proudly swear an oath to enforce the law and maintain public safety, while remaining true to our values of trust, inclusivity and fairness. We uphold the values that define us such as respect by treating every individual with dignity and understanding. We act with integrity and honesty. We strengthen community through engagement and partnership. We embrace innovation to enhance safety and service.
Our choice to serve stems from a commitment to make a tangible positive impact in the lives of those around us. We choose this path to stand for progress, protection and the well-being of our community to those moments of gratitude that our members experience and the heartfelt thanks receive from the public – we feel your appreciation and we thank you in return.
As we move forward and enhance the ways we operate as a police service, it is paramount that we continue to prioritize transparency and accountability. I welcome you to consider this website as your information hub for everything you need to know about your police service – from how to report a crime, to safety tips, breaking news, and how to join our team.
Public safety is our responsibility and our promise. We sincerely appreciate the support of Regional Council, the Halton Police Board, our community partners and residents. Halton is consistently ranked the safest large municipality in Canada, something we have proudly accomplished together. As your Chief of Police, I can assure all citizens that our officers will always be tough on serious crime, and we will be relentless in the pursuit and arrest of the most serious offenders.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all members of our service – especially those on the front lines-for their courage in putting themselves at risk to protect others and for their unwavering efforts in making our region safe for everyone who calls it home.
On behalf of the entire Halton Regional Police Service, it is our honour to serve and protect you.
Stephen J. Tanner
Chief of Police
