Alert to Seniors - Distraction Thefts in Milton

Halton Regional Police are warning the public, especially seniors, to be vigilant for “distraction thefts” occurring in established neighbourhoods and areas where seniors live/congregate.

The usual modus operandi of these thieves is to approach older people either in front of their homes, or on the sidewalk or near retail businesses such as convenience stores and ask the unsuspecting victim for directions.  Once directions are given, the female culprit either hug the victim or offer them a “good luck” necklace to thank them for their assistance, but in doing so actually remove the victim’s own jewellery.

The latest incident occurred prior to 9:00 am in an older neighbourhood near the downtown area of Milton.   Of special concern in this instance was that the victim’s attached medical alert device was taken as well.

The thieves are described as female, one in her 20’s, the other in her 60’s, darker complexions, black hair tied back in buns, wearing loose fitting “silk-like” garments and having thick accents with limited English vocabulary.  They are believed to be driving an older model Honda Odyssey, grey in colour.

Seniors are urged to be aware of this scam and to not engage with strangers that suddenly encroach asking for directions or offering “good luck” gifts.  Families should also be vigilant and ensure their senior relatives are aware of such incidents.

Halton Regional Police remain active in investigating these thefts and making attempts to track down and arrest the subjects.  Community safety and quality of life where the public should be free to enjoy their daily routines without impediment is a priority.
