Halton Regional Police Service Announce Results of Project Safe Start 2026
The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) ramped up its education and enforcement efforts earlier this month through its 19th annual Project Safe Start campaign. As part of this commitment, the HRPS remained vigilant, educated community members, and increased enforcement to ensure any traffic and road safety concerns were responded to in a timely and effective manner.
Project Safe Start ran from Monday, September 7 to Friday, September 18, which reinforced safe driving behaviours to protect students and other motorists during the back-to-school period.
Over the course of the campaign, HRPS officers dedicated more than 3,350 hours to Safe Start, with 2,274 charges laid and 536 warnings issued. Disobeying stop signs and speeding were the top common offences, a trend our Service continues to witness year after year.
“The results of Project Safe Start demonstrate the impact proactive traffic enforcement has on road safety. I would be happier if our officers did not encounter drivers committing infractions, however as enforcement figures would suggest, concerns remain surrounding unsafe driving practices in and around our school zones” said Stephen Tanner, Chief of Police for the HRPS. “As a service we will continue to prioritise youth safety, and our officers remain committed to addressing dangerous driving behaviours and reinforcing the message that everyone has a role to play in keeping our roads safe.”
Project Safe Start has run for nearly two decades and has served as a highly visible reminder to motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians that everyone needs to follow the proper traffic safety laws and take extra caution within and outside of school zones as we work together to ensure our collective safety.
Residents are reminded to report any driving violations, or request enforcement of a particular area here. In an emergency, dial 9-1-1.
