Halton Regional Police Service Statement on Crime Stoppers
The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is aware of the reported cybersecurity incident involving the third-party platform used by Crime Stoppers organizations and recognizes the seriousness of this incident given the importance of protecting the anonymity and safety of individuals who provide information to assist in investigations.
While Halton Crime Stoppers and HRPS have worked closely in support of community safety, Crime Stoppers operates independently from our police service. The Crime Stoppers tip-management platform is not connected to our internal systems.
The safety and security of Halton residents who have interacted with Crime Stoppers is our primary concern. We recognize the importance of public trust, confidentiality, and tipster safety.
The protection of confidential information is paramount. The service has been made aware that some data related to Halton was included in the breach. As such, Halton Regional Police Service has suspended its use of Crime Stoppers while we await further information on the scope and impact of the data breach.
Members of the public who wish to provide information about a crime or public safety concern are encouraged to contact us directly through our existing reporting channels. While this does not provide the anonymity associated with the Crime Stoppers program, it will ensure information is received directly by investigators.
We are actively investigating and assessing potential impacts of this incident on police operations. Questions regarding the breach, the scope of any affected information, and measures taken in response should be directed to the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association (CCSA).
