Police Seize Firearms During Theft Investigation
The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has seized two firearms and laid multiple charges as part of a theft investigation that began in Milton.
On September 2, the two accused broke into a parked vehicle in Milton and stole cash and other valuables, including a watch. On September 3, the same two suspects attended Elements Casino in Milton and stole cash from a guest services drawer. The suspects fled when confronted by security at the casino.
Investigators with the 1 District Street Crime Unit began an investigation and were able to identify the two accused, who worked together in both thefts.
On October 1, officers executed a search warrant at a residence in North York. The two suspects were arrested inside the residence, and the following items were seized (see attached photos):
- A stolen Glock 17 handgun with three loaded magazines
- A Norinco Type 56 rifle with two loaded magazines
- A spring-assisted knife (prohibited device)
Police also recovered items stolen during the break-in to the vehicle in Milton.
As a result of the investigation, Iraklii Shariia (38) of North York and Davit Kukhilava (47) of North York have each been charged with the following:
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm (two counts each)
- Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized (two counts each)
- Contravention of storage regulations (two counts each)
- Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition
- Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited device
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a prohibited device
- Possession of a weapon obtained by a criminal offence
- Theft over $5,000
- Theft under $5,000
Kukhilava was also charged with possession of a prohibited device.
Both accused were held in custody pending a bail hearing.
