Project Safe Start

The start of a new school year is an important reminder that safety is a shared responsibility. The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) remains committed to fostering safe and inclusive communities by working year-round to improve road safety, protect community and school zones, and create safer spaces for residents, student, and motorists.

As the school year begins, we are putting youth safety first.

HRPS officers are actively present in neighbourhoods and community safety zones, working to protect residents and students, promoting road safety and supporting a welcoming environment for everyone.

Through Project Safe Start, officers will conduct proactive enforcement and engage directly with drivers to promote safe driving behaviours, improve compliance with traffic laws, and help protect everyone using our roads and community safety zones during the back-to-school period. Specific attention is paid to speeding, stop signs, seatbelts and school zone enforcement.

Built on the pillars of education, awareness, and high-visibility enforcement, this campaign encourages everyone who uses our roads to do their part. Whether you are driving, cycling, or walking, following traffic laws and safe road practices helps protect everyone in our community.

Back-to-School Safety Reminders

Drop the Distractions: It is a provincial offence under the Highway Traffic Act for drivers to talk, text, or email using a hand-held device while operating a vehicle, whether it’s stationary or in motion. Drivers should put their phones away, eliminate distractions, and pay close attention to their surroundings.

Watch Your Speed: Speeding and aggressive driving behaviours are extremely dangerous, and higher speeds increase the potential severity of a collision. Be alert to flashing 40km/h areas in community safety zones. Motorists are required to slow down where school signs are posted and obey posted speed limits.

Obey Stop Signs: Disobeying a stop sign is consistently among the most common offences during Project Safe Start. Motorists are reminded to come to a complete stop when approaching a stop sign. Drive carefully and be alert to your surroundings before proceeding through a stop sign.

Reporting Dangerous Driving

Residents are reminded to report driving violations or request enforcement of a particular area through the HRPS by: Reporting a traffic concern.
