Crisis Intervention Coordinator (CIC)
The Crisis Intervention Coordinator (CIC) is a new role – the first of its kind to be established in Ontario – and takes on a more proactive approach to Victim Services, by monitoring active calls and dispatching themselves to scenes where people are likely to be experiencing significant trauma. Compared to our Service’s previous method of asking victims if they require the support of Victim Services, this new approach will allow our CIC to quickly show up and offer victims the right help at the right time.
In collaboration with the CSU, the CIC role supports victims and their families during mental health-related calls, and conduct post-incident and follow-up support, in consultation with district social workers. Through this method, the CIC is able to bridge police and community-based resources for community members, providing support to families navigating mental health crises, as well as supporting officer efficiency and overall scene management.
The CIC enhances MCRRT’s effectiveness by providing real-time monitoring, on-scene family support, and post-incident follow-up, ensuring that individuals and families in crisis receive immediate emotional, practical, and resource-based assistance. By managing victim and family needs, bridging connections to community services, and offering guidance on mental health processes, the CIC allows MCRRT officers to focus on assessment and safety while improving overall crisis outcomes and reducing repeat calls for service.
