Oakville Youth Arrested for Racist Graffiti

‚ÄčThe Halton Regional Police Service has arrested a 16 year old male in relation to an anti-black slur written in chalk on Skipton Lane in Oakville (see original release below).

The youth was with other individuals at the time of the offence, however, it has been determined that he acted independently and was solely responsible for the incident.

In accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the youth cannot be identified.

Extrajudicial measures have been utilized to address the criminal act committed by the youth (specifically the Youth Diversion Program as prescribed under the Criminal Code).

The Halton Regional Police would like to thank members of the community who came forward and provided CCTV footage.

The incident that occurred on June 23, 2020 is still under investigation.

****ORIGINAL RELEASE****  Police Investigating Graffiti at an Oakville Neighbourhood

On June 23, 2020, the Halton Regional Police Service attended the area of Liptay Avenue and Colonel William Parkway in Oakville for a report of graffiti spray painted on the sidewalk at this intersection.

On June 28 2020, police attended Skipton Lane in Oakville for similar graffiti written on the sidewalk in chalk. During this incident, 4 individuals were observed walking on Skipton Lane and are believed to be involved in the incident. They are described as:

Suspect 1: male, late teens/early 20's, wearing a red hoodie style sweater.

Suspect 2: male, late teens/early 20's, wearing dark shorts and a dark t-shirt.

Suspect 3: male, late teens/early 20's, wearing a light coloured sweater or jacket and dark pants.

Suspect 4: male, late teens/early 20's, wearing dark coloured clothing.

Due to the nature of the graffiti this crime is being investigated as a hate motivated incident.  The Halton Regional Police will not be releasing the details about the actual graffiti as doing so would further propagate the intended hateful message

We are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that would assist us in identifying the individuals responsible.
