As students returned to school for the 2023 academic year, Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) revved up our online tips to educate drivers on the ABC’s of road safety – Always Be Cautious – and ramped up enforcement efforts in school and community safety zones.

A combined 1,947 charges were laid and 1,389 warnings were issued across the Region between August 28 and September 8 as part of the Service’s 16th Annual Project Safe Start campaign.

Amongst the most common offences were:

  • Drivers failing to stop at a stop sign
  • Speeding
  • Failing to display two licence plates
  • Driving while holding a hand-held communication device

“We’d like to thank the public, our community partners, and the media for their continued support of Project Safe Start. While the campaign has officially wrapped-up for another year, our work is by no means done. We ask that you do your job as drivers to obey the rules of the road, and trust that we will be doing our job to enforce them. Road safety is a year-round priority, and we’re committed to making our roads safer for you, and children across our Region. Together, let’s not just have a safe start, but a safe year.” – Stephen J. Tanner, Chief of Police, Halton Regional Police Service.
