Children's Safety Village

Children's Safety Village

The Halton Regional Police Service Children's Safety Village, a mininiture town with buildings, paved roads, traffic signals, railroad crossing and sidewalks, is located on a 1.5 acre site adjacent to Police Headquarters. It opened in 1987 as a joint project of the HRPS and the Oakville Optimist Club.

Approximately 10,000 children visit the Children's Safety Village each year.

The Children's Safety Village offers free safety-based classes to Kindergarten, Grade 2 and Grade 3 classes within Halton Region. It is not open to members of the general public.

Start times do vary depending upon the safety program chosen. Start times for individual programs are listed on the booking site.

Transportation to and from the Children's Safety Village is the responsibility of the school. Some classes arrive by bus, other in the cars of parent volunteers.

Children's Safety Village Curriculum:

The Halton Regional Police Service has designed unique, age-appropriate curriculum for each grade level to ensure young visitors get the most out of their visit to the Children's Safety Village:

  • Kindergarten:
    • Video on basic pedestrian safety in the Children's Safety Village classroom
    • Hands-on training outside in the Children's Safety Village to reinforce concepts taught in the video. Students walk in groups paying close attention to stop signs, street lights and looking both ways before crossing the street.
  • Grade 2:
    • Instruction on 911
    • Students learn the basic rules of the road in the classroom before taking to the streets of the Children's Safety Village in battery-powered vehicles
  • Grade 3:
    • Students learn about bicycle safety and practice riding bicycles within the Children's Safety Village
